It was a low scoring affair at Busch Stadium, one in which both teams managed hits off each others pitchers, but in the end it was the St. Louis Cardinals falling to the Houston Astros 2-0 on Tuesday night.
Both the Cardinals and the Astros were 1-7 with runners in scoring position in the game, St. Louis stranding six runners on base, and Houston leaving seven.
Houston first got on the board in the sixth inning. Jeremy Peña doubled to lead off the inning and then later came around to score on a single from Jake Meyers. In the eighth inning, the Astros put the game away with a solo home run by Yordan Alvarez, his second of the season. St. Louis did get Lars Nootbaar to second base on a double in the bottom of the eighth, but were unable to drive him across. Houston closer Josh Hader retired the Cardinals lineup in order in the ninth to close the game for the save.
Erick Fedde took the loss, moving to 1-2 on the season, giving up one run on six hits, striking out five batters and walking three. Six different Cardinals each had one hit in the game.
St. Louis and Houston wrap up their series tomorrow at Busch Stadium. Steven Matz makes his first start of the season for the Cardinals, after appearing out of the bullpen thus far this season, taking on Ronel Blanco for the Astros. First pitch is at 12:15pm, pregame coverage will be joined at 12:05 on KY 102 (102.5 FM).
