Doris VanGundy Richardson, 90, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
She was born on December 16, 1934 to Floyd and Mary (Spoon) Mills in Craig, Missouri.
Doris was a beacon of love and generosity in the community of St. Joseph.
Her early career found her within the hustle and bustle of restaurants, where she was known not only for her diligent work but also her warm and inviting smile that made everyone feel at home. Doris's nurturing spirit soon led her to become a cherished childcare provider. Her natural ability to create a loving and safe environment shaped the childhoods of countless children in her care, earning her the affectionate title of "Grandma Doris."
As the years progressed, Doris transitioned to housecleaning, where she continued to spread her characteristic kindness and attention to detail. Her commitment to her work was paralleled only by her dedication to her spiritual and community engagements. As a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Doris's faith was a cornerstone of her life.
She extended her service to the American Business Women's Association, particularly the Pony Express Chapter. Doris's selfless nature found yet another outlet through her volunteer work at the YWCA Women's Shelter. Her tireless dedication to supporting women in need was recognized by her nomination for the Women of Excellence Award. She loved birds and cats
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Ralph VanGundy; second husband, Andy Betts; third husband, Ray Richardson, her daughter, Brenda VanGundy, her son Ricky VanGundy, step-daughter Shirley Mallotte; brothers, James Mills, Bob Mills and Carl Mills; sisters, Zella Davis, Earlena Hontz, Betty Matlock and Linda Rails.
Survivors include her daughters, Cyndra (Mike) Lorey formerly of St. Joseph, Debra (Jack) Smith of Theodosia, MO, Annette (Dave) Swett of St. Joseph, MO; her son Randy (Teresa) VanGundy of St. Joseph, MO.; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Farewell Services and Public Livestream 1:00 P.M. Saturday, November 29, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment I.O.O.F. Craig Cemtery. The family will gather with friends 11:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Saturday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Memorials may be made on behalf of Doris to YWCA Women’s Shelter or St. Joseph Animal Shelter.
