The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied from a four-run deficit late, but the Chillicothe Mudcats came away with a 7-6 win at Phil Welch Stadium Wednesday.
Chillicothe (2-6) got on the board first in the top of the second, but the Mustangs (4-2) took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring all three runs in that frame.
The Mudcats tied the game with a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, and then took a 7-3 lead by the middle of the ninth. Chillicothe put up three runs in the top of the seventh to build some insurance.
St. Joseph never quit, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth to get back to within in a run. But with two outs and bases loaded, Cole Slibowski struck out swinging to end the game.
The Mudcats scored four unearned runs Wednesday, thanks to three St. Joseph errors. The Mustangs also stranded 13 runners on base.
Savannah alum and Des Moines Area Community College commit Tyson Hilsabeck started on the mound, striking out five batters in five innings. He allowed four hits, two earned runs and two walks.
Offensively, no Mustang had more than one hit. Mason Holton scored two runs. Ben Click finished with three RBIs.
St. Joseph is in the midst of a four-game homestand. The Mustangs stay home Thursday to host Joplin. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Gates at Phil Welch Stadium open at 5:30.
