Shirley Lee Scates, 88, Cassville, Missouri, formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2024.
She was born on February 4, 1936, to Orval and Dorothy (Weber) Powell in Chanute, Kansas
She married Allen D. Scates in 1952. He preceded her in death in 2006.
Shirley was a member of the Moila Shriner’s Auxiliary and Order of the Eastern Star. She also was a member of both the McCarthy Baptist Church and Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church in St. Joseph.
She spent many years working as an executive secretary for companies such as the American Angus Association and American Family Insurance. After retiring, Shirley enjoyed volunteering at Mosaic Life Care where she devoted her time to serving others.
Shirley enjoyed landscaping and travelling with her husband. She was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals fan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Allen D. Scates.
Survivors include her children, Mark Scates, Nancy Wilson (James), and Barbara Snapp (J.D.); eight grandchildren, and 18great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, who will cherish their fond memories of a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother.
