John D. Grossnickle 1932 - 2024

ONAGA – John D. Grossnickle, 92, of Onaga, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the Onaga Health and Rehabilitation Center.  

He was born April 4, 1932, at Onaga, the son of Glenn and Kathleen Doyle Grossnickle. He graduated from Onaga High School in 1950.

After high school John worked for the Railroad before being drafted into the U.S. Army, and serving during the Korean War. After being discharged from the Army he returned to the Railroad for a short time, then worked for Dupont and later Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Topeka. After studying about computers in the library, he got a job as a computer programmer with Shawnee County and worked there for many years.     

John was a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC in Onaga and Onaga Lodge No. 188, A.F.&A.M.  He was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 71, in Onaga, until it disbanded.  He currently was a member of the Mayetta Chapter 383 of the Order of Eastern Star.

He married Elvina Thompson on May 4, 1951 in Onaga. She survives, of the home.

John was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Glenn Grossnickle, and two sisters, Jean Ridgeway and LaVon Flowers.

Other survivors include two sons, Daniel Grossnickle and Rodney Grossnickle (Lisa), all of Onaga, a daughter, Stephanie Buhrer (Wayne), Houston, two brothers, Ronnie Grossnickle (Loralea), Corning and Thomas Grossnickle (Shirley), in Oregon, two grandsons, Christopher Buhrer (Casey) and Brian Buhrer (Samantha), two step-granddaughters, London Lyons and Larissa Lyons, and two great grandsons.

Memorial graveside services will be at a later date in the Onaga Cemetery.
