Janice Long was born on September 3, 1946 to Walter and Lylas Hamilton. She graduated from Ritenour High School in St. Louis, and then worked until she enrolled in Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg. It was there that she met John Long. They were married on March 25, 1967, and became parents of two daughters.
Jan later returned to school and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1999.
Jan was a rural housewife, cooking and bringing food to the field and working on their Mound City farm. She volunteered at the United Methodist Church and at the Mound City school where her daughters attended. She was an Avon district manager for four years. Jan was a head daycare teacher in St. Louis for two years, and a head daycare teacher at La Petite in St. Joseph. She later worked at Mound City Thriftway for 11 years. She was currently working at Amazonia Elementary School as a paraprofessional.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and her dog, shopping, decorating her home, and helping her daughters decorate theirs. She enjoyed vacations with her close friends and family. Jan enjoyed the annual Christmas shopping trip with her daughters and grandchildren, family games of BINGO, and celebrating birthdays with her family. When she was younger she enjoyed playing cards. Jan also enjoyed working outside in her yard. She was loved by her Savannah co-workers and the children she taught. Jan enjoyed dancing and spending time with her friends at The Klub.
Preceding her in death were her parents. Survivors include her children, Jennifer (Brian) Kelly of Rock Port and Mandy (Jacob) Crider of Mound City; brothers, Jerry (Carolyn) Hamilton of Athens, Texas, and Greg (Linda) Hamilton of Wright City, Missouri; grandchildren, Lauren, Brecken, and Landrey Kelly, Emma Long and Maycee Crider; and numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
A family gathering will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, October 30, 2023 at Chamberlain Funeral Home in Mound City. Memorials may be directed to Amazonia Elementary School.
