MIAA roundup - Griffons get upset at Kearney, Bearcats beat Fort Hays State Thursday

The No. 16 Missouri Western men's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday night as they lost at Nebraska-Kearney, 75-67.

The Griffons fall to 8-2 on the season, playing their first game since their win over then No. 5. Washburn last Saturday.

MWSU led at halftime, 25-24, but the Lopers then made three consecutive three-point field goals to start the second half to regain the lead and they never trailed again. UNK outscored Western 27-10 in the first nine minutes of the second half and led 51-35.

The Griffons used a 13-3 run to pull within three points, 60-57, with just under five minutes left and only trailed 65-63 with 2:22 left.

However, Nebraska-Kearney made 8-of-9 free throws down the stretch to seal the upset.

Missouri Western shot just 3-of-20 from beyond the arc and 41.3% (26-63) from the field. UNK also outrebounded the Griffons 43-36.

Tyrell Carroll led the Griffs with 19 points, seven rebounds five steals and three assists. Q Mays added 15 points and Caleb Bennett scored 12. 

Missouri Western is at Fort Hays State Saturday. The women play at 2 and the men at 4. The Griffon women (2-7) lost their sixth straight, falling to No. 5 UNK Thursday, 59-34.

Bearcats roll at Fort Hays State

The third-ranked Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team closed their game on a 15-2 run to post a 64-51 win over Fort Hays State at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays Thursday.

Junior Trevor Hudgins carried the  load with a game-high 29 points, marking the 42nd time in his career that he has surpassed 20 points in a game.

Hudgins sank 10-of-17 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 from three. Hudgins added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Thursday marks the 11th straight road victory for the Bearcats, who moved to 7-1 on the season. Fort Hays State falls to 3-7.

Northwest will next travel to Kearney to take on the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. Tip is set for 4 p.m. Saturday, following the women's contest.

The Bearcat women fell to the Tigers, 71-49, on Thursday.
