The agriculture program at Hillyard Technical Center has been selected for a national field test of the new Investigating Agricultural Biotechnology curriculum. According to a release form the Saint Joseph School District, the new curriculum "gives students hands-on experience with laboratory techniques, microbiology, DNA analysis and gene modification, and plant biotechnology applications".

As part of qualifying for this new course, Hillyard instructor Daniel Kahre completed a specialized institute in River Falls, Wisconsin, where he worked through every lesson in the curriculum in four days to prepare himself to instruct it.

The course is designed not only to traditionally educate students, but also have them investigate real world challenges, conduct laboratories, and collaborate on complex issues, and develop critical thinking and technical skills desired by employers.
