It's raining cats and dogs-- literally-- at the St. Joseph Animal Shelter.

The shelter says thanks to a donation from Friends of the Animal Shelter, pets can be adopted right now for 25-dollars.

Humane Educator Aubrey Silvey says events like this have been held all throughout the summer, and they've worked.  Silvey says the events bring more people into adopt, even people from outside the city.

"Maybe people from the Kansas City area will come out and adopt from us or even further sometimes and we do have the adoption specials and events so that's been a huge help because we have had a lot more pets that we needed to place into homes," Silvey tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And we realize eventually people they're at full capacity, your home fills up and you don't have space for more."

Silvey says because some people have that lack of space, the shelter also encourages fostering a pet.

All of the events held by the shelter through the summer Silvey says have been thanks to the support of Friends of the Animal Shelter.

"And the reason for that is because we've consistently stayed so full, I mean the shelter has just been overcrowded all summer long, and that's pretty typical but we have seen an increase this year just because there's been so many owner relinquishes, a lot of people couldn't afford to keep their pets this year," Silvey explains.

Silvey says around this time the shelter normally sees a lot of cats and kittens, but this year it has been seeing a larger number of dogs and puppies.

The adoption event will run through August 16th.
