Several city leaders and residents attended a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday afternoon at Krug Park to kickoff a major renovation project.
Chuck Kempf, Director of St. Joseph Parks and Recreation, says several areas of the park will receive upgrades. Some of the primary areas will be the amphitheater and castle.
"Significant money will be spent on the amphitheatre. We also have the Castle and the Children's Circus, which are basically tied together. One of the most noticeable improvements will be renovating the restrooms inside the Castle," Kempf said.
It was noted that restroom upgrades will be ADA compliant.
The facade of natural stone walls and surfaces at the Castle will also be addressed.
Kempf points out anther section of the park that will be worked on is near the picnic area. "We'll be looking at the shelters, the playground, and the restrooms. They will probably all be replaced."
One big concern that is being addressed is the threat of vandalism. According to Kempf, "We are already talking about security cameras and more lighting. We are also looking at potentially having some areas that will be gated off when the park is closed at night."
Some of the other notable renovations to take place include, restoring the stone walls at the amphitheater and making accessibility a priority. A Buffalo Bowl will also receive work. Information from the Parks Department indicates the Buffalo Bowl will consist of a 'natural playground that will pay homage to the beloved buffalos. Hillside slides are also planned, which will meander down the slopes.'
Drinking fountains at BBQ Boulevard will receive upgrades, along with grills, seating and picnic tables.
The renovation is budgeted at $12,795,000, which is being funded by the half-cent park sales tax and CIP.
Renovations are expected to be completed by summer 2027.
