St. Joseph man dead after shots fired during pursuit in Gentry County

A St. Joseph man is dead after shots were fired during a pursuit that started in Gentry County Thursday night.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop H, at approximately 10:45 p.m. Thursday, the Gentry County Sheriff's Office initiated pursuit with a pickup due to original charges of traffic violations.

Shortly after 11 p.m., it was reported shots were fired from the pickup at a pursuing deputy and the deputy returned fire. According to the MSHP, the pursuit continued on multiple roadways in Gentry County and into Dekalb County where the suspect crashed on Missouri 31 at Fairmont Road.

The suspect, 35-year-old Shiloh D. Smith of St. Joseph was pronounced dead by the Dekalb County Coroner. According to Sgt. Jake Angle with Troop H, it's unknown yet if Smith was shot.

Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control was requested to assist in the investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
