The badge has officially been pinned on and new St. Joseph police chief Paul Luster has been sworn into duty.

A swearing in ceremony was held today at the Law Enforcement Center in downtown St. Joseph as Luster begins his duties as chief.

Following his swearing in, Luster addressed members of the community.

"I will work every day to exceed your expectations as your police chief," Luster says. "I realize we exist as a police department to serve you and we cannot do our jobs effectively or efficiently without your partnerships, without your input, without your engagement."

With several city officials, family members, and officers from both St. Joseph and Kansas City in attendance, Luster was sworn into duty during a ceremony today.

Also following the oath of office and being sworn in Luster addressed the officers of the St. Joseph Police Department.

"When you're out there doing great work, doing your best work, I will support you at all costs," Luster says. "On days when that work isn't quite good enough, I will support you, I will get you the training, the tools, the mentorship that you need so we can do great work together."

Luster comes to St. Joseph as a 25-year veteran of the Kansas City Police department.  He succeeds Chris Connally who retired from the position in September.
