Kansas woman killed in crash after car strikes deer

SHAWNEE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 7:30p.m. Tuesday in Shawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Buick Century driven by Christopher M. Mitchell, 61, Rossville, was westbound on U.S. 24 Highway one mile east of Rossville.  The car  struck a deer, but was attempting to avoid it.

The car left the roadway to the right, traveled into the ditch , returned to the road, spun around and struck a 2014 Buick Encore driven by Mary J. Gruber, 57, Silver Lake.

A passenger in the Buick Century Lucinda C. Mitchell, 63, Rossville, was pronounced dead at the scene and she was transported to Shawnee County Morgue. EMS transported Christopher Mitchell and Gruber to Stormont Vail in Topeka. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.
