James E. “Jim” McCubbin, 94, Atchison, Kansas died Monday, August 26, 2024, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Funeral services will be Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Nicole Schwartz-Eck officiating. Visitation with the family will be Thursday at 10:00 until time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Wathena Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, or charity of donor’s choice and they may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.
Jim was born September 1, 1929, in Lancaster, Kansas the son of Thomas L. and Ida E. Jahne McCubbin. He attended Sunny Hill rural Route School in Effingham, Kansas then Atchison County Community High School from 1944 thru 1945 in Effingham and then Atchison High School for two years graduating in 1947. He was a 1972 graduate of Southern Police Institute University of Louisville, Kentucky: a 1978 graduate of Missouri Western College in St. Joseph, MO and a 1982 graduate of Homicide Investigation, FBI Academy, Quantico, VA.
He and Mary M. Maycroft were united in marriage on June 8, 1952, in Atchison, Kansas.
Jim served from March 15, 1952, until December 30, 1965, with the Atchison Police Department as a top rank detective Lieutenant; and from January 1, 1966, until March 1, 1987, as a special agent for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and from 1987 until March of 2002 in contract investigation in the federal office inv. (OPM Division); and from 1987 until his retirement, he served as a self-employed wedding photographer.
Jim served in the United States Air Force from 1950 until his honorable discharge in 1951 as an Airman.
Survivors include four daughters, Pamela K. “Pam” Schwartz, Atchison, KS; Virginia L. “Ginny” (Mark) Bailey, Atchison, KS; Julia L. “Julie” (Jeff) Houston, Grain Valley, MO; Darla J. McCarver, Springfield, MO; and two granddaughters, Nicole Schwartz-Eck (Jeremiah) and Maryl Chapman (Roland); and one great grandson, Cole James Eck. One sister-in-law, Rosie Maycroft, Atchison, KS.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, and both parents and two sons-in-law, Dr. Jack Chapman and Jack McCarver.
From 1966 until 1987 he was a member of Metropolitan area Major Case Squad (Metro Squad), Kansas City, MO; in 1977 he was named as “Honored Citizen” by the Atchison Kiwanis Club; was a board member of United States Selective Service System; Salvation Army disaster service; a volunteer member of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary and an active member of Atchison United Methodist Church where he held all offices during his fifty plus years as a member. He was a life member of Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post #6 of the American Legion and a fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge #158.
