Long discussions and a ton of development is getting closer to reality on a new animal shelter in St. Joseph.

Between the city of St. Joseph and Friends of the Animal Shelter close to $5 million has been put towards this project, and now interim City Manager Clint Thompson says the city is about to put it out to bid.

"We'll hope next month to have that project bid out, and we're looking to design a project that can meet that $5 million price tag," Thompson tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "With the understanding you never know how the construction industry is, as far as the bids and how they'll come back."

Thompson says city officials are hopeful they can accomplish all the goals that are identified within the five million dollars.

Thompson says the money is all prepared and ready for the project, it's just been a timing issue

"We're getting close to getting this project over the hurdle," Thompson says. "So, the actual bidding of the project is a good sign that we're getting closer to this project becoming a reality."

Thompson says once the contractor is selected, pending the bid comes back within the agreement, construction on the new shelter could potentially begin next spring
