Judy G. Hoffman, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2026.
She was born August 8, 1940 to Vilas Leland and Edith “Opal” (Thompson) Sell in Barnard, Missouri.
Judy grew up in Barnard and learned early in life the value of hard work, devotion, and caring for others. When she was a teenager, her mother became ill with cancer, and Judy came home after school to care for her mother and prepare supper for her father and brothers.
On January 24, 1975, Judy married Albert T. Hoffman, and together they shared many years of life and love until his passing on July 17, 2005.
Judy was a gifted singer and pianist, and music was one of the many ways she brought beauty into the lives of others. She also enjoyed refinishing furniture and spent time helping her father and grandfather restore old pieces.
She was also a talented seamstress. Judy sewed clothing for her nieces and for her neighbors’ children. Among her many accomplishments was a prom dress made from velvet and even a wedding dress.
She served as a CASA volunteer for more than 10 years, advocating for children and standing beside them during difficult times. She was also a rape victim advocate and remained by survivors’ sides throughout the process, offering comfort, support, and a steady presence when it was needed most.
Despite many tragedies in her life, Judy was an amazing friend. She was known for her kindness, her loyalty, and her ability to encourage others even when she had faced hardship herself. She touched many lives with her warmth, her gentle spirit, and her unwavering care for those around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; brothers, Gary and Joe Sell.
Survivors include her son, Jonathen Matthew Hoffman; stepson, Erik Hoffman; sister, Jeanette Pickering; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
