Bitter cold has greater St. Joseph area in its grip, causing cancelations

Snow and bitterly cold temperatures have combined to close schools and cause numerous cancelations Tuesday.

St. Joseph public and private schools are closed today.

The St. Joseph School District has canceled classes with no AMI. St. Joseph Catholic Academy Schools have canceled classes. Classes have been canceled for St. Joseph Christian School.

Savannah R3 has closed its classes. It will hold an AMI day, virtual learning. Elementary students should finish Snow Day Packet #5. Middle and high school students should check Canvas for their assignments.

Riverside USD 114 is closed today.

Missouri Western State University has closed its St. Joseph campus today.

The National Weather Service has issued several advisories during this harsh winter weather. A cold weather advisory remains in effect for the entire Midland Empire until six o’clock Wednesday evening. The Weather Service forecasts extremely cold temperatures with wind chills dipping to as low as 25-below. NWS points out frostbite can occur within 30 minutes of exposure in this type of weather.

An extreme Cold Watch remains in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until midnight.

We won’t emerge from these frigid temperatures until the end of the week. The National Weather Service forecasts a high of 20 Friday with a high of 34 on Saturday, increasingly warmer early next week.
