Some St. Joseph businesses and residents woke up Thursday morning without internet as once again Optimum fiber optic cables were vandalized around the area.
Optimum reports that the damage occurred early this morning and their team is currently working on repairs. A police report has been filed. This is not the first time the area has been impacted. Optimum has experienced a similar act of vandalism affecting network infrastructure in the same vicinity back in February and April, making this a recurring trouble spot. Cables within the network were cut by the criminals, presumably in search of copper which many fiber optic cables contain, however Optimum’s network does not contain copper and the process to restore fiber is intricate.
“We sincerely apologize to our customers who are experiencing an internet service disruption. Our teams responded immediately and are currently working to restore service after our network was deliberately damaged by criminal activity. We appreciate our customers’ patience and urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities," A statement from Optimum says
Optimum expects service to be restored later today.
