Preliminary autopsy results indicate the man involved in a vehicle pursuit last week in Gentry County died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
As previously reported, 35-year-old Shiloh D. Smith of St. Joseph was pronounced dead by the Dekalb County Coroner after a pursuit that started in Gentry County ended with Smith's vehicle crashing in Dekalb County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, on Thursday night, the Gentry County Sheriff's Office initiated pursuit with a pickup due to original charges of traffic violations.
Shortly after 11 p.m., it was reported shots were fired from the pickup at a pursuing deputy and the deputy returned fire. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the pursuit continued on multiple roadways in Gentry County and into Dekalb County where the suspect crashed on Missouri 31 at Fairmont Road.
The investigation is ongoing.
