Missouri Western State University will honor their founders with a proclamation from the mayor and opening a 36-year-old time capsule Monday.
The time capsule was buried in 1990, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first class of MoWest as a four-year college. While initially buried near Eder Hall, it was exhumed to make room for Murphy Hall. The capsule was meant to be opened in 2020, but was put off due to the pandemic that year.
Founder's Day itself honors September 20th, 1915, the first day of class at St. Joseph Junior College. Guest speakers set for the day include MoWest President Dr. Lenny Klaver, Dr. Suzanne Kissock, dean of the College of Business and Professional Studies, Student Government Association's President Tawanda Charumaka II, and VP Unyque Mallett Floyd, Mayor Larry Miller, and alumni council president Dr. Melody Smith.
The event is set for 2 PM at the Glenn E. Marion Memorial Clock Tower, with a reception afterwards in the library at the Hearnes Center. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved inside the Fulkerson center.
