It is Election Day with only two issues on the ballot in Buchanan County.
St. Joseph voters will decide a half-cent sales tax increase proposed to improve the city parks system. Buchanan County voters face a quarter-cent law enforcement sales tax.
With no other issues and no candidates on the ballot, this election likely will attract few voters.
Buchanan County Clerk Mary Baack-Garvey expects a very light turnout at the polls, based on the number of absentee ballots cast.
“It’s been really, really light. So, I would assume maybe we’ll hit 10%,” Baack-Garvey tells St. Joseph Post. “So, it will be a pretty quiet day, I have a feeling.”
One factor could increase voter turnout: the weather. It will be nearly perfect weather for getting out and getting to the polls with sunny skies, a light breeze, and a high of 82 forecast.
There is one precinct change for this election. Those who vote at the St. Joseph Armory will vote at the former Charming Charlie’s at the East Hills Shopping Center today, because the armory is undergoing renovation.
The City of St. Joseph projects that if voters approve a half-cent increase in the city sales tax, it will generate between $50 and 60 million for the park system over the 10-year life of the tax. The sales tax increase does contain a 10-year sunset clause.
Buchanan County projects a quarter-cent increase in the county sales tax will generate $3.6 million annually. Sheriff Bill Puett says the increase will go to raising deputy salaries and adding to his staff.
Polls close at seven this evening.
