Mary L Hammer 1927 - 2024

Posted May 28, 2024 12:44 PM

Mary L Hammer went to be with her Lord on May 24, 2024. She went peacefully after a great day of fellowship with many friends, and had even gotten a pedicure!

Mary was the first child of Ralph & Mary Euler, and was born September 3, 1927 in a house on Ashland Avenue built by her grandfather. She graduated from Central High School in 1945, and almost immediately married the love of her life, Robert A (Bob) Scheidegger. This union was blessed with four sons and finally a daughter.

During her life she took several clerical jobs including American Family and bookkeeping at Meierhoffer Funeral home. She also worked at Kmart alongside her own mother! Mary Lou belonged to several clubs and organizations including the Swiss Ladies Edelweiss Society and the Good Sam’s Camping Club. She was even a part of a local acting group!

She and her husband loved gardening, camping, and their favorite pastime was fishing.

Mary had an affinity for playing bridge and was quite sought after as a bridge partner! She also enjoyed baking, crochet, playing card games, Mahjong and, of course, homemaking, hosting many family birthdays and holidays where there was always laughter and lots of delicious foods.

After Bob passed in 2008, she married Earl Hammer, honeymooned in Switzerland, and then moved to Savannah where she raised six chickens! They later returned to St Joseph and moved to Country Squire. They were good companions in their later years and the Hammer family was very good to her.

Her lifelong claim to fame was her peanut brittle! She was taught by her mother and lived to share it. She made it every Christmas and also during the year from time to time.

Most of her married life with Bob, she called Hope Church in Cosby her home church and had many, many dear friends there. After her marriage to Earl, she attended and was a part of Baptist churches both in Savannah and St Joseph. Earl taught her much about the grace of God and His perfect plan for her life.

Mary was preceded in death by many friends and loved ones, including her firstborn son David A Scheidegger, her husband Robert Scheidegger, her second husband Earl Hammer, and niece Brenda Euler Stevens.

She is survived by sons Kenneth Scheidegger (Teresa), Michael Scheidegger (Linda), Robert Scheidegger Jr (Barbara), and daughter Lori Wilcoxson (Rick), her brother William (Bill) Euler (Joanne), two nephews Bill Euler (Nancy), and Jim Euler, nine grandsons and one granddaughter and many great grandchildren and even great, great granddaughters.

Huge thanks go out to all those who cared for her and prayed with her in her last days, weeks, and months. Her family is grateful for your time and compassion towards her.

She has fought the good fight and finished the race and kept the faith as the Apostle Paul mentions in 2 Timothy. Through it all, she maintained her spunkiness, sense of humor, and joy.

After having her with us for 96 years, she will be missed tremendously.

Family will receive friends Thursday, May 30th from 5-7 P.M. at Heaton-Bowman-Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel.
