Michael Ray “Mike” Workman 1959 - 2023

King City, MO: Michael Ray Workman was born on November 22, 1959, at Doc Barnes’ office in King City, MO to Melvin and Patricia (Hunt) Workman. He died April 2, 2023, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS after a 6 year battle with Vexas.

Mike was a happy-go-lucky child who grew into an ornery, hardworking young man. He loved sharing stories of the shenanigans he got into with his friends. Mike was a man of unwavering faith and was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Platte City, MO.

Sports were his passion. As a WildKat, he was an All-State football player and lived his life fiercely rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs. Mike coached his children’s little league baseball and basketball teams and with his brother Gary, brought youth football to King City.

On November 18, 1979, he met the love of his life at Missouri Western State College. Less than a month later, they were engaged. They were married on July 12, 1980, and celebrated with Taco Bell drive-thru.

Mike was a hardworking entrepreneur. He got his first job at 12 years old learning how to build fence from Herb Derks. In 1982, he founded his own company Workman Fencing. In 1990, with his brother Gary and other family members, they added Lester Buildings which led to the business that continues today. Throughout the years, he shared his faith and mentored many employees who are still cherished by his family. He farmed hogs, cattle, and most recently dairy goats.

He is preceded in death by his father Melvin Workman of King City.

Mike is survived by his mother, Patricia (Hunt); his wife, Tammy (Wallingford) both of King City; his son Kaleb and daughter-in-law Jéssica (Da Silva) of Platte City; his daughter Madison and companion Max Mohr of King City; his sister and brother-in-law Vicki and Mikey Ausmus of King City; his brother and sister-in-law Gary and Lora of King City; his brother and sister-in-law Ray and Kim, many nephews and nieces, and a host of friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at Roberson Funeral Home, King City, MO. Cremation will follow the services and inurnment in King City Cemetery, King City, MO will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
