Adelaide Grace Widman 1925 - 2024

Adelaide Grace (Bell) Widman, aged 98, formerly of Hiawatha KS, died July 9, 2024 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha KS where she had been a resident the past few years. Adelaide was born in Oneida KS on October 30, 1925 to Ernest Roy Bell and Ethel Ruth (Cooper) Bell. She grew up on a farm near Oneida, and in 1941 at age 15, she moved with her family to Hiawatha. Adelaide graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1943.

Adelaide was married to Stanley Lee Widman of Hiawatha on March 5, 1945. To this union, five children were born. She and Stanley divorced in 1980. He died November 6, 2010.

As a military wife, she and her husband lived in Amarillo TX, Albuquerque NM, and Roswell NM. She also lived in Oskaloosa IA for two years in the early 1960s. Adelaide, Stanley, and their four children moved back to Hiawatha where they owned and operated the Hiawatha Laundry for ten years.  

Survivors include her daughter, Janice Smith, of Hiawatha; sons Duane (Connie) Widman of Topeka KS, and Darwin Widman of Overland Park KS; three grandchildren, Jerad (Micaela) Widman of Olathe KS, James (Rachel) Widman of Topeka KS, and Karla (Erin) Smith-Specht of Hiawatha; and 19 great-grandchildren.  

Adelaide was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Alton, Howard, Edwin, Darrel and Garth Bell; a sister Helen Irene Weidman; and sons Galen (in infancy) and David Widman. 

Services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, with Shane Spangler officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday.  The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Saturday.
