Missouri Western State University has doubleheader sweep in home opener

In the latest MWSU Fieldhouse home opener in quite some time, seven Griffons made their home debut and were victorious in a gritty 62-55 over Lincoln.

Sophomore Logan Hughes had her best game for the Lady Griffons, scoring a career high 14 points and tying a career high with 5 rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench including three makes from behind the three point arc.

Freshman Mary Fultz also had a solid night off the bench scoring in double figures for the second time in three games with 11 points and also had two steals.  Once again the Griffons went deep into the bench with twelve players seeing action while ten scored in the contest.

With the win, the Griffs improve to 2-1 on the season and are now 15-1 under Coach Whitaker on Tom Smith Court.  Whitaker improved to 23-9 all-time as Griffon coach

The Missouri Western men used a big second half to pull away from Lincoln University and pull off an 89-73 win on Thursday night for the home at the Fieldhouse.

The Griffons improved to 2-0 on the season shooting  48% from the field and had four players in double figures, led by sophomore Will Eames, who dropped in 25 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow sophomore JaRon Thames added 16 points off the bench, with Tyrell Carroll and Q Mays adding 14 and 12 respectively.

With the win the Griffon men are 2-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season and 2-0 in MIAA play for the first time since 2009.

Next up for Missouri Western the homestand will continue on Saturday when Central Missouri travels to St. Joseph.  The afternoon will get started at 1:30 pm when the Lady Griffons tip off against the defending MIAA champion Jennies, with the men tipping off after that.
