Robert Jon “Bob” Nourie passed away at home on March 10, 2024. He is survived by his wife Kitty, son Andre (Zlata), daughter Marisa Phillips (John), son Nick (Kristi), and three grandchildren Noah, Andreana, and Avery, as well as beloved dog, Dora. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Stella, and his brothers, Richard and Lee.
Bob was born in Beaverville, IL., and was proud to have been a member of the Potawatomi Nation. After graduating from high school, he began a lengthy military career, which included a tour in Vietnam. He earned his law degree at UMKC and eventually worked in the Legal Assistance Office at Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and served as Judge Advocate General at Quantico. He also was posted as a judge in Okinawa for a year, an experience he shared with his whole family.
Following his retirement from the military and move to Doniphan, Bob was a prosecuting attorney in Nodaway County, MO. He also gave his time generously throughout the community. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and, as a member of the Kansas State Historical Society, he was on the board that organized the Lewis and Clark bicentennial commemorations. More recently, he was involved with the Doniphan Cemetery Board and the restoration of St. John the Baptist Church in Doniphan, where he and Kitty married in 1970. He enjoyed a variety of hobbies in retirement, including cycling, traveling, painting, woodworking, cooking, keeping a disagreeable horse named Chester, and planting a vineyard to make his own wine.
A memorial will be held at St. John the Baptist Oratory in Doniphan on Saturday, March 16 at 2pm. Friends and family are invited to continue Bob’s efforts to restore the church. Donations can be made to St. Benedict Parish (memo: St. John’s Oratory) and entrusted to Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, 208 N 5th St, Atchison.
