For the first time in his collegiate career, one Missouri Western golfer from St. Joseph is taking the course for the NCAA Regionals.
It's been an outstanding year for Jeffery Johnston, a Bishop Leblond alumnus and now junior at Missouri Western, all culminating in a trip to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships.
Johnston tees off today in the Midwest/ Central Regional. Johnston says he's excited for the opportunity and is ready to compete again.
"I put in the proper work for it, so I think I'm ready to go on Thursday," Johnston tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.
Johnston is one of 32 individuals competing in the NCAA Tournament. He enters as the top ranked individual
Johnston says it’s hard to prepare for a tournament like this, since he's never been in one, but knows he just need to go out and do what he does best
"I know that people play some good golf no matter what kind of tournament it is," Johnston says. "As long as I stick to what I know and do what I do best, I think I'll do just fine."
All of the Johnston brothers are doing big things on the golf course.
Two qualified for state high school golf, while the eldest is in his first NCAA Regional
Jeffery, Tim, and Patrick Johnston will all be at Missouri Western next year, but this year Tim and Patrick are headed to Springfield, while Jeffery is in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Jeffery says it's something they aim to do, and it would be pretty cool if he and his brothers could all bring something home
"I know it's what we want to do, and I know that we're all able to do that for sure, so I think if we kind of do what we do best and do our thing it's a possibility for sure which would be great," Johnston explains.
While Jeffery Johnston tees off today, Tim and Patrick don't tee off until Monday
