William "Bob" R. Alig 1936 - 2023

William Robert "Bob" Alig passed away peacefully on February 6, 2023 after a long bout with cancer. Bob was born March 5, 1936, the fourth child to Edward and Elizabeth (Werner) Alig in rural Leavenworth Kansas.

He attended a one-room schoolhouse without electricity or running water for his first six years of schooling. The family then moved to Leavenworth and he was enrolled in the Old Cathedral School at 5th and Kickapoo finishing his elementary years there. He went to Immaculata High School for 3 years before transferring to LHS his senior year and graduating in 1954.

He went to work for the Jahn Brothers Grocers for 18 years advancing from stock boy to management, and worked at First National Bank for 1 year before accepting a civil service position at Fort Leavenworth where he spent 29 years, retiring in 1994 as the Deputy Commissary Officer. He retired because of health reasons, and was a cancer survivor. He served as Eucharistic minister for several years at both St. Joseph and Immaculate Conception churches, and he was the last president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Immaculate Conception. He worked and ran bingo at IC and later worked bingo at the Leavenworth Eagles Club. He also spent 12 years in the Kansas National Guard reaching the rank of Sargeant First Class.

In 1996 Bob met and married Helen Stafford-Kaeding at St Francis de Sales Church in Lansing on July 3, 1996. Father Burger conducted the ceremony.  Bob and Helen both loved to travel. Those travels included Alaska, Hawaii, and many other states, as well as several locations in Mexico, Spain, many islands in the Caribbean, and more. They both enjoyed going to casinos, playing bingo, and going to grandsons' ballgames.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 2016. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers Edward Jr., Ralph and Eldon,  and 2 sisters Rose Marie Donald and Juanita Dodd.

He is survived by one sister, Doris Warford, of Medina, Ohio, step-son Robert “Pete” Kaeding (Sandy), step daughter Julie Navinsky (Mark), 4 step-grandsons, 5 step-great-grandsons and 1 step-great-granddaughter, as well as 8 nieces and 1 nephew and a host of friends.

Visitation will be Febraury 13 at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Leavenworth at 9:00AM with the mass to follow at 10:30 followed by the burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.
