A shooting involving a St. Joseph Police officer late Saturday night at the Heritage Sports Complex is currently under investigation as the search is underway for the other individual involved.
St. Joseph Police report that just before 9pm on Saturday night, a St. Joseph Police officer patrolling near the Heritage Sports Complex in the 2000 block of Water Works Road observed a suspicious individual on foot. As the officer attempted to contact the individual, the individual allegedly fired at least one round towards the officer. The officer immediately returned fire, and the individual fled on foot into a wooded area North of the sports complex.
An extensive search of the area for the suspect is ongoing. The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department assisted with its helicopter for approximately one hour. The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the ATF are also assisting with the search, including the deployment of canines.
The officer was not injured during the incident and currently investigators have not located any evidence indicating the individual was injured. The individual has not been located, and the investigation remains ongoing. Residents in the area encouraged to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity.
