Trade negotiations between the United States and Mexico have reportedly stalled over disagreements involving tariffs on steel and aluminum. The dispute could delay meaningful progress until after the November third midterm elections. According to reports, American officials have resisted Mexico's requests for lower tariffs on products containing steel and aluminum. Mexican officials argue the duties affect a substantial portion of their country's economy and want tariff relief included in any agreement.

Negotiations reportedly cooled after an American counterproposal failed to address Mexico's concerns. Mexico's ambassador to the United States, Roberto Lazzeri, acknowledged earlier this week that negotiations remain stuck on several details. The impasse creates additional uncertainty for businesses on both sides of the border. For American agriculture, broader trade negotiations remain important because Mexico is a major customer for U.S. grain, meat and other agricultural products.
