A St. Joseph woman who drove the wrong way on an Interstate 229 exit causing a deadly crash in downtown St. Joseph will spend four months of shock time in the Buchanan County Jail.

Buchanan County Circuit Judge Dan Kellogg sentenced Katherine Deweese in the wrong-way crash last May that killed 33-year-old motorcyclist, Ryan Coffman.

Deweese, found guilty of second-degree involuntary manslaughter, is prohibited from drinking or going to bars, must submit to regular substance abuse testing, and can only drive with an alcohol ignition interlock device. Deweese also must perform 250 hours of community service.

Deweese claimed in court she didn’t see the wrong-way signs when she took the I-229 exit ramp at Edmond and South Third Streets crashing into Coffman’s motorcycle in the early morning hours of May 17th of last year.
