Rising diesel prices could make a big difference in where farmers receive the best return when delivering grain. The Soy Transportation Coalition is reminding producers about its online calculator that compares grain prices with transportation expenses. In one example, a soybean buyer ten miles away offers twelve dollars per bushel, while another buyer fifty miles away offers fifteen cents more. With diesel at three dollars and seventy-five cents per gallon, the farther location provides nearly 25 dollars more profit per truckload.
But when diesel climbs to six dollars and thirty cents, the closer buyer becomes nine dollars more profitable. Those differences can add up quickly when producers haul 130 to 200 loads during harvest. The calculator works with corn, soybeans, wheat and other commodities. Farmers can compare their own delivery options at soytransportation.org/calculator.
