Man dies after pulled from Kansas house fire

JOHNSON COUNTY—One person died from injuries in a house fire Thursday in Johnson County.

Just after 11a.m. Thursday, fire crews responded to a fire at a home in the 11500 Block of Nieman Road in Overland Park, according to a media release. 

As they arrived, fire crews saw smoke coming from the back of the 2-story, single family home. As crews began to attack a fire in the living room, a neighbor reported a man may still be in the house. 

Fire crews searched the home and found the man on the second floor. He was rescued and transported to the hospital in critical condition, according to the release. He died a short time later, according to Overland Park police. The man was identified as 77-year-old David L. Zabriskie of Overland Park.

Fire crews contained the blaze to the living room. However, the entire. home suffered significant smoke damage. Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire.
