Melvin L. Wiltz passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025.
Born in 1941 in Sabetha, Kansas, Mel lived a full life consisting of love for his family, service, and sports. He graduated from Sabetha High School and went on to proudly service in the United States Navy. Following his military service, Mel earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Business degrees from Old Dominion University while working full time at Virginia Chemicals. He served as a active member of the Kempsville Lion’s Club for over 30 years and was a member of St. Gregory The Great Catholic Church.
Mel’s athleticism and passion for sports gave him a competitive drive and edge. He excelled as an avid billiards player at Q-Master Billiards, and enjoyed winning, but also provided instruction to people, including his good friend, Rod Liverman. Mel loved to play gold and was extremely proud of his “hole in one” achievement. He was an exceptional league bowler and tournament tennis player.
Mel had a deep love for all animals as evident by bringing home a little cat, caring for it naming it Oreo. He build a large custom cage for two pet bunnies, Munchkin and Bun-Bun. His love, however, knew no bounds for his two Bichon Frise’ doggies, Buttons and, later BJ (Buttons Jr.). Mel faithfully walked his doggies in the neighborhood earning him the title “I’m the man that walks the little white dog.”
Mel was predeceased by his parents: George and Clara Wiltz, Brothers: Raymond Wiltz and Gerald Wiltz, Sisters: Margaret Miller, Elenora Blocker, Theresa Robinson, and Mildred Haverkemp.
Mel’s wonderful memory will be cherished by his loving and devoted wife of more than 50 years, Greta, his sister Gertrude Bolgrean of Fargo, ND, brother Virgil Wiltz of Hiawatha, KS, very special nieces and nephews: Donna Lysse (Larry), Don Hallenbeck (Cielo), Susan Bugl (Tim), Richard Hallenbeck, Andrew Jerrick, Louis Jerrick (Patty), Lori Castellano (Joseph), in addition to many other great nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.

A celebration of Mel’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2025, at St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery in the Fidelity Community, south of Sabetha. Military honors will be a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.
Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, is assisting the family with local arrangements.
