Russell Ora Fosburg was born on March 8, 1952, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Ora and Edith Fosburg. He was one of many siblings in a large and loving family, including Donald (Donny), Joyce Starkweather, James (Jimmy), Robert (Bobby), Betty, Janice Deatsman, Teresa Meher, Mark, Dale, and Nancy Wireman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A seeker of knowledge, Russell was always learning. He graduated Lakewood High School, attended Manhattan KS Community College and went on to get his Bachelor’s Degree from Upper Iowa University.
In 1974, Russell married Cindy Gardiner. Together, they built a beautiful life over 43 years of marriage. Though they later divorced, they remained devoted friends, continuing to support one another with love and respect.
Russell dedicated his life to service. As a decorated combat medic in the U.S. Army, he served for over two decades, specializing in nursing and overseeing medical field hospitals. His military career took him across the globe, with assignments in Kentucky, Colorado, Alabama, Washington, Texas, Korea, and Kaiserslautern / Berlin, Germany, before retiring at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Following his military service, Russell continued to care for others as a licensed registered nurse in retirement communities. He was deeply committed to his patients and their families, treating each with compassion and dignity. His work was more than a job—it was a calling.
A true patriot, Russell had a deep love for all things Americana. He honored the American flag, admired eagles, and found joy in running, fitness, Michigan and K-State football, and the camaraderie of his work family and the residents he served.Above all, Russell cherished his role as a father and grandfather. He is survived by his three sons: Shane (Nickie) Fosburg, Chadwick (Jamie) Fosburg, and Colton Fosburg, and by six beloved grandchildren: Tyson, Alex, Chase, Reese, Ella, and Jackson.
On July 23, 2025, Russell was welcomed into his eternal home through the grace of Jesus Christ.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Russell’s name to the American Diabetes Association.
