Additional school counselors and social workers are on hand at south end St. Joseph schools in wake of the shooting death of a district student.

St. Joseph police are releasing few details. Police only say a teenage boy shot and fatally wounded another teen shortly after seven o’clock at a home in the 800 block of Mason Road. The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, but he died of his wounds.

Identities of the students involved have not been released.

The St. Joseph School District states in a news release, “Our school staff is committed to providing emotional support for our students and staff in times like these.”

In addition to sending extra counselors to the schools involved, the district says it will monitor the need for additional mental health services over the next several days. The district encourages parents to listen and speak with their children who are struggling in wake of the tragedy and to reach out if they feel their child needs additional support.
