The Second Harvest Community Food Bank surpassed its goal during Hunger Action Month in September of pounds of food packed to distribute thanks to community members and volunteers.
Second Harvest entered September with a goal of packing over 45,000 pounds of food. A total of 41 volunteer groups throughout the month helped raise nearly $20,000 to help towards the efforts at the food bank. Overall, just over 67,000 pounds of food was packaged in the Second Harvest warehouse. 1,159 senior boxes were packed during the month and 649 family boxes were also put together by volunteers. Volunteers at Second Harvest also helped in packaging 1,000 pounds of cereal to be distributed.
In addition to the food packaged at the food bank, 2, 398 pounds of food were collected during Second Harvest's Fill the Van events, where shoppers at various grocery stores helped fill up Second Harvest vans with non perishable foods.
Not included in the amount of food packaged and donated was food donated at mobile food pantries or partner food pantries to Second Harvest. Second Harvest Community Food Bank thanks the community for their support during Action Hunger Month.
