After several years of hard work, St. Joseph has a new animal shelter, and members of the St. Joseph City Council are elated the work is completed after celebrating at last week's ribbon cutting.

At Large City Councilmember Marty Novak says the new shelter has been a long time coming and is a great asset to the city.

"It's a beautiful facility, I think it's nice where it's at, yes it's on the Belt Highway, but there's great visibility there," Novak says on the KFEQmunnity show. "And I think that's really important when we try to look at adoption of all these different animals."

The new shelter officially opened its doors last week, the city holding its ribbon cutting on Friday, and Friends of the Animal Shelter holding its own event the following day to celebrate the new facility.

Novak says during the ribbon cutting there was a tremendous amount of support and people present at the event.

"But what was really nice was getting to go inside and see this new facility, where when it's beating down 100 degrees outside, these animals are in an environment where the temperatures are controlled and they're fed and everything is taken care of," Novak explains.

Novak says if you haven't had the opportunity to visit the new shelter, to get out and see it, and view all the new amenities that have been made for the animals

"What got me is they've got these two rooms, and they've got big windows there, and they've got cats and little kittens, but they've got all these different contraptions that keep these animals occupied," Novak says. "Cats jumping up and down and running up and down the walls, totally, totally amazed me, and then the facilities with the dogs, it really is a beautiful facility and I'm so glad that we finally achieved that."

The Animal Shelter is located at 3409 S. Belt Highway
