Repairs to the roof of the Buchanan County Courthouse may take a bit more time and be a bit more expensive than initially expected.

Buchanan County Presiding Commissioner Scott Nelson says the roofing bids came in much more costly than expected.

"What was budgeted for, and the thing that I found strange was the bid that we opened didn't include dome work, so it's bid plus dome," Nelson tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr.

Nelson says all the bids separate roof repair and work to be done on the dome work, rather than lumping them together.

"They were having a hard time even bidding the dome, so they just bid the roof and then said whatever work needs to be done on the dome, x amount per linear foot of calk, x amount per square foot of paint or spackle or whatever they use up there, it's like an unknown," Nelson explains.

Nelson says currently he and his team are working together to figure out some other solutions for how to repair the roof.

"Let's identify where the leaks are in the slope, let's look at that, yeah they have to be fixed but do you have to replace the whole roof to fix that," Nelson says. "But we obviously need to do something to the dome and before we do that, I'd like to get a real good idea of what that's going to cost."

Nelson says to do that they may need to bring in an engineer to look at the dome and roof to figure out the costs
