Two died, three were injured in a Platte County traffic crash Sunday morning in which alcohol might have played a role in the fatal wreck.
The Platte County Sheriff’s Office reports a minivan traveling west on 92 Highway shortly before 10 went off the shoulder of the road, overcorrected, crossed into the eastbound lane, and collided with a sport utility vehicle.
The sheriff’s office reports a 37-year-old Salina, Kansas man, the minivan driver, died at the scene. A 14-year-old boy, a passenger in the minivan, also died at the scene. Two other passengers, a six-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl have been hospitalized with moderate injuries.
The driver of the SUV, a 67-year-old woman from Platte City, suffered moderate injuries.
An investigation continues, but the Platte County Sheriff’s Office reports the preliminary investigation indicates alcohol might have been a factor in the crash. No one in the minivan was buckled up.
“Crashes like this one are a tragedy for all involved, their families and their communities. It also highlights the importance of wearing seat belts. I encourage everyone to properly utilize seat belts and child safety seats every time they are in a vehicle,” Sheriff Mark Owen stated in a Facebook post.
No names have been released.
The crash is being investigated by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team.
