The Justice Department is expanding its investigation into record-high beef prices to include eight major grocery retailers. According to Meatingplace, the review now includes Kroger, Walmart, Publix, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize, Costco and Amazon. The investigation follows an earlier antitrust probe into the nation's largest meatpackers. DOJ is reportedly seeking information dating back to 2020 on beef pricing, profit margins, operating costs and purchasing arrangements. 

Beef prices have risen considerably faster than overall inflation. Government data show beef and veal prices increased 9.4 percent during the 12 months ending in July. Ground beef increased nine percent, steaks nearly ten percent and roasts more than 13 percent. Analysts say drought, higher production costs and a U.S. cattle herd at its lowest level in 75 years are contributing to tight supplies. Strong consumer demand could also keep beef prices elevated into 2027.
