The St. Joseph Goats had a season to remember in their third year as members of The Arena League, winning the teams first ever title in its second year in St. Joseph.
The Goats beat the Arkansas Diamonds 52-30 to claim the title, going from being knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, to not making the playoffs, to a championship in three years. Maybe even more memorable than winning the title, was bringing home the championship in front of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.
During his time in St. Joseph for Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp, which wrapped up on Thursday, Reid took some time on an off day in a sideline box at Civic Arena in downtown St. Joseph watching the Goats and the Diamonds. He even got the opportunity to reunite with a former Chiefs tryout player, Goats wide receiver and former Missouri Tiger D'ionte "Boo" Smith.
Reid praised the local football scene in St. Joseph with the Goats, and congratulted the team on bringing home the championship as Training Camp closed on Thursday.
"It was fun to watch, Steve Craig I know is a big part of this community and he takes a lot of pride in that team, and I loved the show it was great," Reid told reporters during his closing press conference. "Congratulations to them for winning the championship, it doesn't matter what level you're at it's a championship, and they were the best at what they did and my hat goes off to them, it was fun."
