Attorney Laura Chavez has been chosen to fill the Municipal Court Judge vacancy left in wake of the death of Municipal Judge Ted Elo.

Chavez, a St. Joseph native, was chosen by the St. Joseph City Council which considered two candidates to fill the vacancy. Chavez graduated from Bishop Leblond High School and Missouri Western State University. She earned her law degree at Creighton University in Omaha.

Chavez served as the City Prosecutor in Municipal Court for the last ten years. The St. Joseph City Council will formally vote to confirm Chavez at the April 28th City Council session as an emergency ordinance.

Her appointment will remain effective until the April general municipal election next year.
