The next phase of improvements to the intersection of U.S. Route 59, Alabama Street, and County Route U in the southside is about to begin.
Starting Wednesday the 30th, crews will shut down 59's northbound lanes from Ohio Street to Alabama, in order to stabilize the ground under the road, install new turning lanes, and pave driveways and the roadway. Work will also be continuing off the road at the new alignment for Route U.
This phase of work is currently expected to be completed by mid-December. The end date for the project at large has been pushed back to September 2027, due to utility and stabilization work unexpected in the original estimate.
