Two men remain at large after leading a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper on a high-speed chase in southern Buchanan County, then fleeing on foot after running over spike strips and ditching their SUV.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports a trooper began pursuit of the SUV early Thursday night, traveling south on I-29 south of St. Joseph. Speeds ranged from 75 to 100 miles per hour. Another trooper laid down spike strips and the SUV ran over them. The vehicle ran off the west side of the interstate into a field after the tires blew.

The driver and a passenger fled the SUV on foot into a thick, wooded area.

Two patrol dogs were brought to the scene, but lost the scent in the woods. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department deployed its drone and the Kansas City Police Department brought in its helicopter to help in the manhunt. No evidence of the two were found and the manhunt was called off after three hours.
