The St. Joseph Mustangs used a four-run seventh inning to take their first lead and fended off a late charge from the Clarinda A’s to hang on for a 5-4 victory at Phil Welch Stadium Monday.
The Mustangs were held without a run in the first five innings and got down 2-0 in the top of the first. Mid-Buchanan and Missouri Western alum Brady Holden led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a double.
Reliever Jack Wells was the winning pitcher, striking out two in middle relief. Despite giving up two earned runs, Wyatt Hardy got the save in the ninth.
The Mustangs stay home to face Jefferson City in a makeup game Tuesday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. St. Joseph lost to the Renegades on the road Sunday, 4-2.
