Dorothy Charlyn Thurnau, 100, Maryville, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
She was born July 31, 1924 in Craig, Missouri to Frank and Lula (Pebley) Wright. She grew up in the Craig area and graduated from Craig High School.
Dorothy married Edgar Frederick Thurnau on March 23, 1946. He preceded her in death on November 22, 2004.
She was baptized into Christ at Craig Christian Church, and later was a founding member of Concordia Lutheran Church, now Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in Mound City. She also was an active member of the Ladies Aid Society.
Dorothy was known for her massive garden, which resulted in lots of canning, and was famous for her baking – homemade bread, croissants, and noodles were all favorites.
Her family meant the world to her. She made personalized scrapbooks for all of her children and grandchildren, and loved having the whole family over for Sunday and holiday dinners.
Dorothy leaves her family with a lasting legacy of the value of hard work and taking care of others.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Edgar; her parents; two sisters; and four brothers.
Survivors include her children, Ellen O’Coin (Joe), Bill Thurnau (Carol), Gail Otte (Kim), David Thurnau (Terry), and Barbara Harte (Jim); grandchildren, Mary O’Coin, Joseph O’Coin, Justin Thurnau, Andrea Edwards, Matt Otte, Melissa Otte, Tegon Schuster, Ryan Pierce, Lindsey Pierce, Jenny Wright, and Jessie Yartz; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Farewell Services and Public Livestream 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 3, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Mound City, Missouri. Interment I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, Missouri. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Three Rivers Hospice in St. Joseph or Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
