You don't have to rent a submarine to travel under the ocean, just head to the historic Missouri Theatre this weekend.
Robidoux Resident Theatre will put on a rendition of SpongeBob The Musical, with the first show taking place tonight.
Actor Hunter Bailey, who plays Larry the Lobster, says the musical is an interesting adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon.
"And the difference is that the musical is not a cartoon at all, it's actually a very unique and appealing story about life, about resilience, about friendship, and just what it means to be a part of a community and to come together to solve problems and to really unite as one group of people," Bailey tells K-JO 105.5's Sam Starr.
Bailey says while most musicals are written by one person, the music in this show comes from several different famous musical artists
"Artists such as like Panic! At The Disco, Lady A, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, all of these artists that just really came together to write a phenomenal show," Bailey says. "So, throughout the show you're going to experience a lot of different kinds of music and it's even more fun to perform and so far, we've gotten a wonderful reaction to all of it."
Over the past week performances of the show were held for area schools to prepare for opening night.
Bailey says while the show has great music it has even more stunning visuals that have been brought to life by set designer Frank Polleck.
"Just really bringing the undersea life, Bikini Bottom to life on the stage, and there's always something to look at," Bailey explains. "We have an incredible cast who is just super talented in bringing their character to life on the stage for everyone."
Tickets are still available for all three shows. Opening night is tonight at 7:30pm, with shows also Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:30pm.
