Plans to increase tariff-free beef imports from South America are drawing concern from U.S. cattle producers. President Trump says additional beef will be coming tariff-free from Argentina, Brazil and other countries as the administration attempts to address historically high retail beef prices. The proposal comes with the U.S. cattle herd at its lowest level in about 75 years.
The administration is trying to balance two competing goals — increasing beef supplies for consumers while encouraging American ranchers to retain heifers and rebuild the domestic herd. The import proposal comes alongside new executive orders designed to increase competition in livestock markets, expand domestic processing capacity and strengthen country-of-origin labeling. Imported beef can increase supplies relatively quickly. Rebuilding the American cattle herd, however, could take years. That means producers will be watching closely to see how additional imports affect cattle prices and herd-expansion decisions heading into 2027.
