Early planting is slightly ahead of schedule

Producers in Missouri saw 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending April 21st. Statewide, the average temperature was just under 61 degrees, nearly 4 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged seven-tenths of an inch, three-tenths below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 28 percent short to very short, and 72 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 46 percent short to very short, and 54 percent adequate.

Corn planted reached 47 percent, more than double the 5-year average of 21 percent. Corn emerged reached 12 percent, compared to the 5-year average of just 3 percent. Soybeans planted reached 16 percent, compared to the 5-year average of only 3 percent. Winter wheat headed reached 23 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 5 percent with condition at 2% poor to very poor, 21 percent fair, 77 percent good to excellent.
